Would you ever consIder moving up Norf?
Have been seriously thinking about this lately after spending some time in North Yorkshire last year and really liking it, could see myself seeing my days out in a nice cottage on the Dales or somewhere similar, nice walks, pub lunches etc. You get so much more for your money property wise up there, it seems more traditional (old England ish) and nice pubs, countryside etc.

Downsides - People speak funny, although that said I encountered plenty of Southern accents up there, you are no longer on your own manor, no underground transport, away from family (although this could be a positive in some cases no doubt) no West Ham, not near to London, etc.

Of course, for some, they can't shift due to work, kids at school, etc, but all being even would you ever consider it?

Cunt away..

No fuck that.

Love it in the lake district etc, but the weather up north is generally fucking atrocious and considering I live in one of the driest places in Britain and like walking my dog, doing it every other day in the rain would piss me off.

If I ever retired anywhere and moved from Essex, would probably be in Dorset.

The north is for the odd weeks sightseeing and walking only!!

I live in the midlands.

For what you can buy for £500k compared to London...it's got to be worth considering?

And a commute into London is 70 mins from Birmingham International

Grumps - Yes, thought about Dorset way too, but a bit cut off down that way. York for example is a big city with other big cities nearby and ca get a train to London in a little over 2 hours.

Does it really rain that much more up there?

Re: Would you ever consIder moving up Norf?
I've done two tours to the lake district covering 3 weeks and it was only dry on one of them.

I could have been very unlucky though.

May be safer over the east side of the country, but anywhere near Manchester and beyond seems to be right under where all the shit weather comes from.

I'm no sun worshipper which is why I generally holiday in England, but the constant rain is a Bastard.

Never done the peak district, have to give it a go sometime.

Yea agree, rain drives you nuts. Maybe East side is better which is where I like. I hardly got any rain in a week last year.

I love it up north spend all my holidays up there now North Yorkshire Northumberland are beautiful unspoilt places.
If it was down to me I'd move up there like a shot.
Can't convince my mrs though she wouldn't even move to Suffolk from Essex.

We moved down to Devon last year and love it, not cut off as trains into London are regular. On match days I get £35 Return into Paddington.

I've just moved up norf, transferred my job and I'm in London for most home games.

In 5 years I'll either still be here, have found legal passage to Canada, or have moved to Leigh on Sea. Likely the first one though.

I really liked huddersfield when we went up there for the away day, seeemed like a nice quiet place but still had the main shops etc

I checked out the house prices are roughly 100k for a 2 bed - half the cost down my way (kent) and much better value for money

shame the weather is grim up north though

Not exactly up North, but I moved from Romford to Cambridgeshire about 15 years ago. Less than 90 minutes by Car back to see family/mates (Far enough away that they don't just turn up too)

It's a different world up here - I moved into a small village 25 minutes from Cambridge City Centre so there's plenty to do if I want to drive into the city, but there's less traffic and fewer people generally.

I work for a big company in London, but I work from home full time and only go into the office a couple of times a year (or less if I can get away with it)

Downsides...things aren't as convenient as they are in Romford/London. Uber/Ubereats simply don't exist where I live and there's only a couple of takeaways that will deliver to me.

Internet has improved greatly with fibre, but still behind more urban areas, but mobile/4g can be awful/non-existent.

Love going on holiday in England/Wales but the further away from civilisation you get, the more you realise what you take for granted. Been on holiday to Devon/Cornwall/Norfolk where they don't even pick up most digital TV channels and the internet is almost dial-up speeds.

Re: Would you ever consIder moving up Norf?
Yeah my sister moved to somewhere called Stoke Ferry quite a few years ago, which is near Kings Lynn.

Her house is mustard and a converted school church and she had money left over from buying it after selling her bungalow in Brentwood, but that's because it's a good 8 miles fro, Brandon which is the nearest town with half decent shops.

Lovely place, but proper in the middle of nowhere for me.

once you leave financially challenging to return as you will perceive getting less for your money.
